From a cloud covered sky
On a winter gray day
This I tell you, my friends, as a secret
A box dropped to the ground,
It made hardly no sound
But it echoed, and still does, I mean it.

Since the box has a door
And two windows- glass clear
With a bed and a fire to warm
And a traveling stranger
Be it saint or a ranger
Is welcome before he moves on


And they did find it needed,
The box on the hill,
And they came one by one or in pairs.
A knight and a hunter
A thief and a sculptor
And some crazies, with straw in their hairs.

They were all very pleased
The fire did sing
As the night fell and snow wrapped the land
When in morning they found
They were still on this ground
They were happy of all other men.


The knight left a sword
With a moon silver blade
To protect it from danger and evil
To his queen, when she asked,
He did not say a word
And the spark in his eyes still a riddle

The hunter left feather
Of his pine green felt hat
Its bright colors as joyous as spring
When a dark metal bullet
Shot him down, it was too late
But he did not regret anything
The thief could not give

So he took what he could
And the box stood as empty as tomb
But his conscience did bite
And night after night
He crawled back, like a child to a womb


When the sculptor came in
To the ivory white box
That the thief so thoroughly cleared
He fell down to his knees
And let himself freeze
And the stars swirled around him and cheered
(Art can be so fuckin' weird)

When the crazies came by
With the straw in their hair
Ringing smile and a bucket of paint
Took a bowl of hot water
Poured it on the poor sculptor
They freed him and sent him away
From an ocean blue sky
