Dancing With Wolves was made in 2001, shortly after the breaking of the second Inthifada. This temporal context is important, because the Palestinian uprising was a generator for major changes inside the Israeli society, mostly to the worse. The general atmosphere in these days was that all other preoccupation but politics and security are luxury, a common attitude, which had extensively increased at that time.
In Dancing With Wolves we casually locate ourselves at the heart of the dissension- the geo-political and the internal.The physical location is a high bridge between east and west Jerusalem (the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict), the soundtrack is a mix of sounds recorded from our apartment window in Jerusalem. These are the conditions we have to deal with – we choose to bend them to our own needs; let the sirens be our music, let the bridge-bar be our stage. On this background we perform our act, a careless, bold dance between heaven and earth, between the real and the imaginative.
Dancing With Wolves is a defiance against reality, against gravity, against shorted-sight society. We dance like MTV hunks, like manga warrior, if you like. Our movements are just signs. Only manipulation can make us survive.
Dancing With Wolves entstand 2001, kurz nachdem die zweite Intifada ausbrach. Dieser zeitliche Kontext ist wichtig, da der palästinensische Kampf zu grundlegenden Veränderungen in der israelischen Gesellschaft geführt hat. Alle Beschäftigungen mit anderen Bereichen als Politik und Sicherheit wurden als Luxus angesehen. Mit Dancing with Wolves platziert sich das israelische Künstlerpaar Effi und Amir im Herz der geo-politischen und inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung.
Der Schauplatz ist eine hohe Brücke zwischen Ost- und Westjerusalem, dem Zentrum des Israelisch-Palästinensischen Konflikts, der Soundtrack besteht aus einer Mischung von Geräuschen, die die Künstler aus dem Fenster ihres Apartments in Jerusalem aufgenommen haben. Die Kriegssituation, mit denen sie täglich konfrontiert sind, wird zum künstlerischen Material. Die Sirenen werden zur Musik, die Brücke wird zur Bühne für ihren Tanz, einem Tanz, der sorglos und mutig zugleich ist. Sie tanzen wie für MTV, wie Manga Kämpfer in einem Comic: einen wilden Tanz, der sich zwischen Himmel und Erde, Realität und Imagination bewegt.
Dancing With Wolves ist eine Anklage gegen die Realität, gegen die Schwerkraft, gegen die kurzsichtige Gesellschaft.
