Check It

2000 | installation | lights, speakers, monitor, lights organ, wood, paint | video | 03'15

Dozens of security checks, at the gates of shopping malls in Jerusalem, shot stealthily from inside the checked bag, were edited to create a video work which is a kind of protest clip, with original Rap music created by zipping and unzipping the checked bags.

The aggression embodied by the shopping mall, by its architecture, by the shiny expensive-like materials used in flooring, coating, lightening, also characterize common images in rap video-clips. And our action, in return, also refers to the principal of protest and opposition to oppression that stood in the basis of the early rap movement.

At the gates of the shopping mall, the visitor discards his own self and enters an uniformed, passive, collective experience. At the gates, the security check does the first step when the public space\ the public eye invades the private space (the bag) and steals its privacy.

In the Israeli reality, shopping malls and other public buildings are preferred targets for terror attacks. Therefor the oppressive methods in these buildings are widely accepted as legitimate ones. The action of interpenetrating the camera and the forbidden photography, is our little act of terror, our private eye that invades and appropriates the public eye, the public space and use it to its own purposes.
