Five Obstructions

Places of Articulation: Five Obstructions | 2020 | installation |

Places of Articulation: Five Obstruction is one of the pieces derived from the project Places of Articulation.
Five short episodes of shibboleth-like situations are recounted by five individuals while their voice is being analysed, measured and visualised.
An additional screen, with a microphone on top of it, gives a live feedback of the sound in the space, inviting the spectator to watch their own voice.
The same visualisation is also the source of two shapes painted on the wall, on both sides of an opening in the wall, representing two sounds S and SH, the sounds that served to identify the Ephraimites and the Giledites in the biblical Shibboleth story.
On the opposite wall, a large drawing, taken from a manual published by the German immigration authorities (BAMF) and destined to the BAMF employees who are treating asylum seeker's requests. The illustration depicts the automatic dialect detection tool which entered into service in 2018.
